Wema sepetu sentenced, found guilty of drug possession

Former Miss Tanzania Wema Sepetu has been found guilty of possession and use of illegal drugs by the Kisutu Resident Magistrates court in Dar es Salaam.

Wema was sentenced to a one-year jail term or pay a fine of Sh88, 000 (Tsh2 million) for the two crimes she was charged for.

Giving the ruling today, resident magistrate Thomas Simba, however, set free her co-accused having found them innocent of any wrong doing.

Her two employees, Ms Angelina Msigwa and Matrida Abas had also been arrested and taken to the police station for questioning alongside Wema.

This matter has sparked public debate especially on how the artists have been handled. I’m not here to say whether the authorities are right or wrong. I will leave it to the public to judge. One thing is clear though: Most of these listed are victims of drug use,” the Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Mr Nape Nnauye was quoted saying at the time.

Nnauye, however, cautioned the public against labelling the persons of interest until the matter was fully determined and investigated.

“Let’s not judge them on the basis of accusations alone; we should be mindful that it takes years and a fight of a lifetime to create a brand, but it only takes a few minutes to destroy it. We should be careful in waging this war and ensure that once the dust settles, they (artists) can get back to their normal lives,’’ said Nnauye.

The pretty actress was recently represented by her mother Mariam Sepetu after she failed to appear in court.

According to her mother, Wema was in India for fertility treatment and could not make it to court.
