IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe quits her job saying commission cannot conduct credible election as is constituted
Kenya is set for repeat presidential election on October 26
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) staff Roselyn Akombe has resigned.
Akombe has resigned with only 8 days left to the repeat presidential election.
She said that the repeat election cannot meet the ‘free, fair and credible’ expectations as it is currently constituted.
“We need the Commission to be courageous and speak out, that this election as planned cannot meet the basic expectations of a CREDIBLE election. Not when the staff are getting last minute instructions on changes in technology and electronic transmission of results,” read a section of her statement.
She said the decision to quit working for the commission borders threats to her life and that the IEBC was becoming party to the political crisis in the country.
“The Commission has become a party to the current crisis. The Commission is under siege. It has become increasingly difficult to continue attending plenary meetings where Commissioners come ready to vote along partisan lines and not to discuss the merit of issues before them,” said Akombe.
